Vipers 5 Canucks 4

Dawson Creek -- A third period comeback fell short on Saturday night and the Sexsmith Vipers hung on for a 5-4 win handing the Dawson Creek Jr Canucks their third straight loss.

Sexsmith got on the board very early on their first shot of the game. Kelby Gaton blasted a shot past Tyson York just 20 seconds in and the Vipers had the lead. Dawson Creek would answer on the power play just over 4 minutes later. Carl Dahlen snapped a shot low past the Vipers' Spencer Jebb to tie the game at 1. A lapse in the Canucks' defense gave the Vipers the lead at the 13:45 mark. Nolan Trudeau was sent in all alone and fired a rolling puck past York. Ryan Walker would add his 5th of the season before time expired and we were tied at 2 after the first.

Special teams was the story in the second as the Vipers took the lead on a 5 on 3 advantage. That was followed 31 seconds later by a 5 on 4 power play marker and the Vipers held a 2 goal lead after the second period.

For a while I had marked the second intermission as the broadcasts Safeway turning point. The Canucks came out very hard and cut the lead after Ryan Walker's second of the game just 5:42 into the third. Unfortunately for the Canucks the Vipers had an answer. It came on the power play and a long shot deflected past York off of one of the Canucks' sticks and the 2 goal lead was restored.

Dawson Creek continued to control the play in the third. Carl Dahlen's second of the game on the power play was the third goal of the period in a 2:06 span and the lead was once again only a goal.

The Safeway turning point came in the final five minutes. The Canucks were on a power play and looking to tie but a huge penalty kill from the Vipers paved the way for the victory.

The Canucks were 2 for 9 on the power play and the penalty kill was a disappointing 1 for 4.

Preview

The Dawson Creek Junior Canucks (11-5-1) welcome the Sexsmith Vipers (2-12-0) to the Memorial arena Saturday night. This marks the second meeting between the two teams this season and the first in Dawson Creek.

Last game:
The Canucks were on the road in Fort St John and the game was tied at 2 early in the second before the Huskies went on an offensive explosion and you can credit a lot of that to the power play and newcomer Cam McKinnon. McKinnon found the back of the net 4 times, added an assist and dropped the mitts to complete the Gordy Howe hat trick. The Huskies won the game 7-3.

The Canucks went 1 for 7 on the power play while the penalty kill was good only 5 of 9 times.

Head to head:
In one meeting so far this season it was the Canucks winning 6-2. Charles Radke scored a hat trick and added an assist in the victory. The Canucks went 3 for 5 on the power play while the penalty kill was good 2 of 3 times. The rest of the season series is listed:

Nov. 29 @ Dawson Creek
Dec. 5 @ Dawson Creek
Jan. 3 @ Dawson Creek
Jan. 9 @ Sexsmith

Leaders:
Goals: Charles Radke (16)
Assists: Radke (16)
Points: Radke (32)
PPG: Radke (5)
SHG: Radke (1), McLean (1)
GWG: Smith (2)
GAA: York (3.46)

Game time tonight is 8:00pm at the Memorial Arena. Peace FM will broadcast the game starting at 7:45pm with the pre-game show. Listen live on Peace FM: 94.5/104.1/www.peacefm.ca

Game Day Blogging

Woke up this morning and started the day with a solid breakfast of french toast. I flipped the tube to TSN and found out that it's Special Olympics day on TSN. Oh look, Ben Mulroney showed up to answer phones. Is there anything this guy doesn't do? After two and a half hours of Special Olympics day the network is now airing a fishing show. Man, I love fishing but I need to find something else to watch.

=====

It's been a few days since my last post and tonight the Canucks will host the Sexsmith Vipers. In my last post you saw that the Canucks dropped significantly in the power rankings while the Vipers are out of the basement for the first time all season. This is an interesting match-up.

Will the Canucks have Radke, Keen or Garnett back? Will Tyson York be the goaltender we saw in three straight victories or back-to-back losses? Can the Canucks power play get going tonight? There are lots of questions that we will try to find answers to tonight.

I'll post a full game preview this afternoon before the game.

=====

Forgive me tonight if you listen to the broadcast. My voice is falling apart and I think that I am getting sick. I don't have much of a voice left so please bare with me tonight as I will try to do the best that I can.

=====

Sportsline is still a go for Monday night. We are going to have some great discussion. Television producer for 55 CHET TV Jacob Zeher and Jay from Peace FM's midday's will join me to discuss some UFC action as well. It is a go so you can tune in Monday night at 6:05pm.

=====

I'm going to grab a bite to eat before I head for Dawson Creek. Gotta do some x-mas shopping. I'll post a full game preview before I head out. This is where it would be handy to have wireless internet on the go. (Hint hint... nudge, nudge...)

Have a great day!

Power Rankings

1. Whitecourt Wolverines (14-1-0) (LW: 1)
2. Fort St John Huskies (12-6-1) (LW: 3)
3. Peace River Navigators (10-5-1) (LW: 4)
4. Grande Prairie Wheelers (8-6-2) (LW: 5)
5. Dawson Creek Jr Canucks (11-5-1) (LW: 2)
6. Sexsmith Vipers (2-13-0) (LW: 8)
7. Beaverlodge Blades (5-9-2) (LW: 6)
8. Slave Lake Wolves (4-14-1) (LW: 7)

-The power rankings are compiled with input from members of the NWJHL media.-

=====

Let's make some observations.

-First, we knew that the Canucks would drop after their last two games. That's a no brainer.
- Whitecourt remains on top and they have done nothing to prove otherwise. Voice of the Wolverines Dave Dawson is quoted in an e-mail: "every line is producing, they’ve found a number one goaltender, and its scary to hear coach Joey Bouchard say these guys HAVEN’T hit top gear yet." ... scary.
- This week's biggest bust was the Canucks but who else fell? Well Slave Lake and Beaverlodge also fell in the rankings after sub-par weeks.
- Which teams made the biggest splash? The Huskies, Navigators and Wheelers all moved up this week but it was Sexsmith who made the biggest jump. Finally out of 8th place in the rankings and threatening to jump out of the basement for the first time this season. I am really looking forward to Saturday night's game. The Canucks better come out to play.

The Chetwynd NBIC girls hockey team hosted a 3 team tournament this past weekend at the Chetwynd and District Recreation Centre. The following report was submitted by the Chetwynd Echo's Max Fawcett:

They (Chetwynd) lost the final 4-3 to Fort Nelson, even though they won every other game they played. Rough luck for them. They beat FN twice, too, before the final. Top scorer in the tournament for Chetwynd was Marlee Martens, and their goalie Brooke Walker played a hell of a tournament.

Back to blogging

It is was a very tough couple days for the Jr Canucks late last week. With losses of 8-3 and 7-3 the Canucks returned home with a bitter taste in their mouthes. I said in my last post which was from the weekend that I would post after I thought about it for a bit. Well, truth is, I wanted to forget about it and just move on.

The Canucks are back home on Saturday night for their only game of the week when they welcome the Sexsmith Vipers. This is a great opportunity for the Canucks to get in a good week of practise and take out some aggression on Saturday night. The Canucks have to be careful not to take the Vipers lightly. Sexsmith has upset Fort St John for their only victory of the season and if the Canucks come out flat this could happen again.

In the two losses the Canucks were without their top players in each area of the game. Leading scorer Charles Radke was out of the line up while the 'Nucks were also missing captain Tyson Keen and goaltender Cody Garnett. Having two or all three back this weekend would be a huge boost.

It was an off weekend for Tyson York who looked much better against FSJ than he did in Grande Prairie. You can't blame him for the four power play goals against on Friday. The Canucks were a little slow on Thursday as well. The effort just didn't seem to be there in races for loose pucks and in battles along the boards. Much better effort on Friday.

That's all I really have to say right now. I'll have you're updated power rankings later on today.

Have a great day!

The Canucks power play went 1 for 7 while the Huskies were 4 for 9. Brass Scissors three stars: 1) McKinnon 2) Blain 3) Dahlen

The second place Dawson Creek Junior Canucks (11-3-1) are on the road Thursday night in Grande Prairie and will be looking for their fourth straight victory. The Wheelers (7-5-2) are looking to get hot and are looking for their second straight victory after defeating Slave Lake 4-2 on Sunday.

Last Game:
The Canucks were at home for three games in three days this past weekend and after winning the first two (3-1 over Beaverlodge; 4-0 over North Peace) Beaverlodge was back at the Memorial Sunday afternoon.

Tyson York made his third straight start for the Canucks but was tested often by the Blades who kept the game close. It was a great shift from Ryan Walker and a goal from Lucas McKenzie that ended up being the game winner at the 14:08 mark of the third.

The Canucks power play went 1 for 7 while the penalty kill was good 5 of 6 times.

Head to Head:
The Canucks and Wheelers haven't met since way back on October 10th when Grande Prairie visited the Memorial. A combined 7 points from the trio of Reid Smith, Colter McLean and Charles Radke led the Canucks to a 4-3 win. Dawson Creek also won in Grande Prairie on October 3rd 5-2.

In a pair of meetings between the two clubs this season the Canucks are 2 for 10 on the power play while the Wheelers have gone 3 for 19.

What a weekend ahead! Weekends don't get much better than this for a sports fan.

Just look at what's ahead:

Thursday: I'll be calling the Canucks game in Grande Prairie
Friday: I'll be calling the Canucks in Fort St John
Saturday: The Montreal Canadians are honouring the career of Patrick Roy and CBC has quite the line up.
(note times are ET) 3pm-Rangers @ Sens 7pm-Chicago @ Toronto 7pm-Boston @ Montreal 10pm Detroit @ Calgary.
Sunday: Titans vs Jets in the morning and then the Grey Cup in the afternoon. Not to mention that TSN has like 11 hours of pre-game for the Grey Cup planned so there won't be any shortage of things to watch.

Add that up and it looks like a pretty good weekend. And if you're looking to put it over the top, add in a "24" 2 hour special event on Sunday evening and this could be the best line-up in a while.

My advice: Plenty of fluids and planned bathroom breaks will help maximize the viewers enjoyment.

Cold Wednesday Morning

The thermometer read -20 when I woke up this morning and it felt like it too.

As I was walking to work I realized that it's only Wednesday and that this week is really going by pretty slow.  It will pick up soon, however, as the Canucks hit the ice tomorrow in Grande Prairie and Friday night in Fort St John.  The boys will be looking for their fourth consecutive victory after taking three in a row this past weekend.

Will Tyson York be between the pipes?  Only time will tell.  He looked very good in three wins this weekend although there were shaky times in the 4-3 victory over Beaverlodge.  He passed his first real test in shutting out Navigators and both the Wheelers and the Huskies are at or above the level of the Nav's at this point.  Should be interesting.

I'll be staying at the George Dawson Inn Thursday night as the bus won't return to Dawson Creek until past midnight.  That'll mean I'll be passing on the Hit and Miss morning show Friday morning.

=====

The wheels are slowly starting to turn on the development of Sportsline.  We have talked about firing it up for the past few weeks now and it looks like we are pretty close.  Max Fawcette has agreed to come on the show as a co-host.  Max is the editor of the Chetwynd Echo and is starting to expand the sports in the paper.  You can check out his minor hockey wrap and his "three stars".

We are hoping to fire it up next week.  Fingers crossed.

Power rankings are coming later in the day.

Have a good one!

Canucks 4 Blades 3

DAWSON CREEK -- Beaverlodge returned to the Memorial Arena on Sunday afternoon and almost left with a victory.  The Dawson Creek Canucks were pushed to the limit but held off the Blades 4-3.

Colter McLean opened the scoring at the 13:41 mark of the opening period when he took the puck all the way from inside the Canucks blue line down to the Beaverlodge zone and muscled a shot through Tavis Clark and into the back of the net.  The lead didn't last long as the Blades tied it with a shot from a tough angle that beat Tyson York who was in goal for the third straight game.

The Canucks took the lead for the second time in the game very early in the second.  Just 56 seconds in Jason Higson threw the puck on goal and it banked in of of a Beaverlodge defender past Tavis Clark.  The Blades would answer to tie the game at two but Tyson Keen would change that before the break.  With just 10 seconds left Keen walked in from the blue line and snapped the puck under the glove of Clark into the back of the net.  3-2 after two.

The Blades would tie things up very early in the third with a nice passing play deflected in to the top corner over the shoulder of York at the 1:39 mark.  The game changed with one shift with five minutes to play.  Coincidentally this was the Safeway turning point.  Ryan Walker did all the work getting the puck to the net and Lucas McKenzie poked in the loose puck for the game winner.

Brass Scissors three stars: 1) Tyson Keen 2) Ryan Walker 3) Bobby Bailey

Canucks were 1 for 7 on the power play while the penalty kill was good 5 of 6 times.

Canucks vs Blades this afternoon!

Game time is 2pm from the Memorial. I'll be on the air with the broadcast starting with the pre-game show at 1:45pm.

Coming into the game the Canucks have won two straight and this will be the third game in three days for the team as well.

For more on the game you'll have to tune into the pre-game show. I believe it plays over the speakers in the lobby so show up early for interviews and thoughts on this afternoon's contest.

A couple things you can think about is that Tyson York could get his third start today. He has been great in goal the past two nights. And the line of Carl Dahlen, John Howes and Jason Higson has really been good. These three have found some chemistry and are grabbing the attention of the coaching staff. That has resulted in more ice time as well.

Tune in this afternoon to Peace FM for all the action starting at 1:45pm.

Canucks 4 Navigators 0

Tyson York was between the pipes Saturday night as the Canucks shut out the Navigators on home ice.

The scoring opened midway through the first at the 11:18 mark when Ryan Walker (Colter McLean, Charles Radke) put his fourth of the season past Tavis Clark. It was a great second effort for the veteran forward to get the puck past Clark and give the Canucks the lead.

In the second Jason Higson continued his hot play by putting home an absolutely beautiful pass from Carl Dahlen past Clark stretch the lead. Higson now has points in four straight games (3G 3A).

Tyson York was solid throughout the game and it was not more important than in the third when the Nav's had a 5 on 3 power play for just over a minute. York made several great saves including one on a Navigator all alone inside the hashmarks.

Charles Radke added a pair of goals in the final frame to cement the victory for the Canucks. The Canucks went 1 for 5 with the extra man while the penalty kill was a perfect 8 for 8.

Brass Scissors three stars: 1) Tyson York 2) Charles Radke 3) Carl Dahlen

Fight Card:
1) Lewis Weaver vs Kyle Smith: Weaver with the takedown and the decision.
2) Carl Dahlen vs Jay Gaydosh: Decision goes to Dahlen in this one.
3) Evan Weaver vs Ryan Gallant: Call it a draw with not many landed.

Canucks 3 Blades 1

The Canucks welcomed the Blades to the Memorial Friday night for the the first meeting between the clubs this season.

A power play marker from Lewis Weaver had the Canucks up one after twenty minutes. After trading goals in the second the Canucks put it away in the third when Charles Radke scored his fourteenth goal of the year to make the final 3-1.

Tyson York was in goal making his second start of the season and looked sharp in the victory. Blades had Tyler Vant Erve between the pipes and he was very good as the Canucks badly outshot Beaverlodge.

The The Brass Scissors three stars: 1) York 2) Tyler Vant Erve 3) Lorne Weaver

Fight Card:
1) John Howes vs Bobby Horseman: Howes gets the decision.
2) Lewis Weaver vs Josh Zimmerman: DRAW. Zimmerman had the early adv and Weaver finished strong.
3) Blain Rodgers vs Ryier Hommy: Rodgers gets the takedown and the decision.

Power Rankings

1. Whitecourt Wolverines (10-1-0) (LW: 1)
-Wins of 3-0 over Sexsmith and 5-4 over Slave Lake have the rest of the league knocking on the door.

2. Dawson Creek Canucks (8-3-1) (LW: 2)
-Despite a loss to FSJ, the Canucks hang onto number 2 this week. A huge weekend ahead with three games in three nights.

3. Fort St John Huskies (10-4-1) (LW: 3)
-Losses to Sexsmith and Beaverlodge can't sit well at this point in the season.

4. Grande Prairie Wheelers (6-4-2) (LW: 5)
-A big win over NP could get the Wheelers going.

5. North Peace Navigators (7-4-1) (LW: 4)
-A big weekend (FSJ/DC/SL) could go a long way.

6. Beaverlodge (5-5-2) (LW: 6)
-Beaverlodge is starting to turn it on with three points in their last two games. The Blades will see the Canucks for the first two times this weekend.

7. Slave Lake (3-10-1) (LW: 7)
-Just one win in their last 9 games and it was an overtime decision.

8. Sexsmith Vipers (1-11-0) (LW: 8)
- The Vipers had my vote for 7th but the media has them stuck in 8th. They are becoming a team that will suprise some down the stretch. Their play a solid system that resulted in their first win of the season.

The remote isn't working this morning and I'm too lazy to get up and change the channel.  I guess it's a good thing that it's stuck on Sportsnet but I'm looking to watch some football.

Some scores are coming in from the NWJHL this weekend and a couple scores might shock you.

Let's start with last Sunday.  Whitecourt beat Sexsmith 3-0.  Not the typical Wolverines.

Friday November 7:
Sexsmith 5 OT Fort St John 4 - I had to refresh the page when I saw this.  Sexsmith did look good in the early stages against Dawson Creek and now have put it together for their first win of the season.
North Peace? Slave Lake?

Saturday November 8:
Sexsmith 2 Whitecourt 10
Beaverlodge 7 Fort St John 4

Last Game:

It was a thriller in Peace River on November 1st as the Canucks battled the Navigators.  In a match-up of two of the league's best the road team came from behind for the victory.

Led by a combined 7 points from Jason Higson (2G 1A) and Charles Radke (2G 2A), the Canucks came from behind twice to beat the Navigators 5-3.  Also scoring for Dawson Creek was Captain Tyson Keen.

The three goaltender carousel continued to spin as Ricky Yamagouchi (sp?) backed up Cody Garnett who started his 9th game of the season.  Tyson York was the odd man out.

The Canucks went 1 for 7 with the extra man while the penalty kill was a perfect 6 for 6.

Head to Head:

There have been just two meetings between these two teams before this afternoon.  Season opening night back on September 20th, the Huskies won 6-5 in overtime while back in Dawson Creek on October 17 the Canucks won 6-2.  Jason Higson had a pair of goals in the win and if he continues his hot play we could see that again.

There were three fights to end the October 17th contest including a great tilt between Reid Smith and Kyle Porter.  A great fight with good shots thrown and Smith earned the decision.  Could we see round two?  We'll wait and see.

Nov 9 Canucks @ Huskies

Nov 21 Canucks @ Huskies

Dec 13 Canucks vs Huskies

Road Trip:

The Canucks are finishing up five straight games away from the Memorial in which the club is currently 3-1.  Dawson Creek is looking for win number four in a row before heading home for three straight.

Who's Hot:

-Jason Higson put up a pair of goals and added a helper against North Peace.  He'll be looking to continue that pace today.

-Charles Radke has 13 points(9G 4A) in his last four games.  Incredible.
