DAWSON CREEK BC -- In a penalty filled affair the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks were unable to clinch third place in the North West Jr. Hockey League dropping a 3-2 decision to the Grande Prairie Wheelers.
It is very tough to think about tonight's game. There is such a bitter taste left and there is much that could be said and probably should be said. Duncan Redfearn put things pretty well in the Chetwynd Redi Mix Jr. Canucks post game show. I'll post the comments when I write up a full game summary.
In other NWJHL action Friday night the Fort St John Huskies beat the Peace River Navigators 7-1. I was getting the updates from Mike Feeney and the texts read "the score flatters Peace." Where are the wheels on the bus?
Also there was a bit of a scary moment at the end of the hockey game including one Huskie taken off on a stretcher after a Gerry Young hit. They ran the clock out. Hopefully I'll find out more later.
With the FSJ win, 2nd place is out of reach for the Canucks and it makes tomorrow's game HUGE. I'm looking forward to it.
For now it's time to sleep and I will post a game summary from Friday night when I wake up.

Long time no post
Well look at who has decided to finally make a blog post. Yes I know it has been a while.
Today is Friday the 13th. Spooky for some but for others it's just another day. For me it's a 2 year anniversary from the day I started dating Megan. That's pretty special so I better have some pretty special plans. How about a junior hockey game? The Canucks play tonight so I better make up for that.
=====
Tonight's game is HUGE. Tomorrow night's game is HUGE. You get the idea. This weekend (the final 2 games in the regular season) is it. We will have all the questions answered. We will know who will finish in 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the NWJHL. This is exciting.
=====
Not much of a post today because there are more important things going on. I will fill you in on the broadcast tonight (Puck drop at 8:00pm MST on Peace FM; DGS Astro Paving Pre-Game show at 7:45pm MST).
=====
Enjoy your day!

Morning Loop
We'll start off this mornings blog post with some observations as I watch the Sportscentre morning loop.
=====
What is happening to the world today? A rare soccer goal was the Sportscentre 'highlight of the night.' Something else that I don't understand: why is every goal on the soccer highlight package a 'splendid goal!' or 'what a goal!'..? I know goals in the sport are rare but come on.
=====
If you caught Coach's Corner on Saturday night you would have seen Don Cherry ripping the Buffalo Sabers and their coach Lindy Ruff for putting Thomas Vanek on the ice late in the game. Vanek already had 3 goals and the team was up 3-0. Cherry said something along the lines of 'the hockey gods will come back and get you. Don't run up the score!.' Again, that was roughly translated.
Well look at what happened. Vanek took a puck off the jaw and is out 3-4 weeks. Carma's a b&%#$.
=====
It's a pretty miserable day in the Peace and the roads are taking a beating. Be careful. There has already been a few accidents on the highways.
=====
The Battle of the Boarder goes tonight in Dawson Creek at the Encana Events Centre. The Calgary Oval Extreme play the US Women's Selects. This is the first of four games in this year's series and it'll be a good one. Get your tickets fast. They have sold out every event and this is year 4. I'll be there, will you?
=====
I've watched the morning loop 4 times now and I think that's a sign to get out of bed and accomplish something today.
Have a great day!

Canucks 6 Navigators 2
PEACE RIVER, AB -- In possibly the biggest game of the season the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks came to play and play for 60 minutes they did.
Cody Garnett was between the pipes for the Canucks while the Navigators countered with Bretton Stewart and the goalies were tested in the first. Both teams came out hard and after the first it was scoreless and each team had collected 11 shots.
In the second Dawson Creek scored early. Reid Smith (17) put a shot on goal from the side boards that just squeaked through the pads of Stewart and trickled past the line. Jason Higson picked up the assist on the goal that was scored at the 1:07 mark. Before the five minute mark had hit the lead was 2-0. This time it was Carl Dahlen (10) with the short side roof job on the power play. Credit the 'apples' to Colter MacLean and Tyson Keen.
The Navs got one back at the 10:32 mark. With just seconds left on a power play, Kelsey Dyck drove down the left wing and put a wrist shot high over the shoulder of Cody Garnett and the lead was 2-1. The momentum didn't last too long and at the 17:24 mark we had the game's Safeway Turning Point.
On a play created by Jason Higson in the corner a Nathan Bomben slap shot was deflected by Reid Smith (18) into the back of the net to make the score 3-1. Just 59 seconds later Jason Higson (20) broke in on a partial breakaway shorthanded and made a great move on Stewart and the Canucks were beginning to pull away up 4-1 after 40 minutes.
Brett Steward was replaced in the Navigator net by Michael Bauer to start the third and the team came out hard. Kyle Richardson found a rebound and put it past Garnett to cut the lead to two at the 3:18 mark of the third but that was as close as they would get. A pair of Jason Higson power play goals would round out the scoring making the final score 6-2 for the Canucks.
The Canucks outshot the Navigators 12-5 in the final stanza and 30-25 overall. On the power play the Canucks went 3 for 7 while the penalty kill was good 8 of 9 times.
Brass Scissors three stars: 1) Higson 2) Smith 3) Keen. Hardest working Canuck: Higson.
There were three fights on the night, all in the final five minutes of the third. First it was Lucas MacKenzie and Steve Melnyk. They fought to a draw. Second was Lewis Weaver and Kyle Smith. Both players landed some big blows but they landed them on each others helmets or so it looked like from the broadcast booth. Call it a draw. And finally the headline was Ryan Walker and Gerry Young. These two went at it and it was a GREAT tilt. Bombs were thrown and landed on both sides. I thought Walker landed a few more while PA announcer Orren Ford thought that Young landed a couple more. Call it a draw as well.
Next up for the Canucks is the final weekend of the season that will seem them host Grande Prairie on Friday and Peace River on Saturday. A victory of the Navs will clich 3rd place for the Canucks. They lead Peace River by 1 point now with 2 games left for each team and they trail Fort St John by 3 points but the Huskies have a game in hand.

Biggest game of the year?
I ask the question because this possibly could be the biggest game the Canucks have played so far.
The Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks are on the road this afternoon in Peace River (3:30pm MST puck drop on Peace FM; DGS Astro Paving pre-game show at 3:15pm MST).
I'm looking forward to this game and we will break it all down on the pre-game show.
Talk to you then!

Canucks Game Day
DAWSON CREEK, BC -- I was up and on the road by 7am this morning for Dawson Creek for what is going to be a 4 day trip.
When you hit the road that early in the morning there are two types of trips you can have: a) you can be tired and have what seems like a very long ride. or b) you are excited and ready for the day and the trip flies by. My trip was the latter.
I was on location this morning from 9am - 1:30pm at the Northern Lights College for one of the provinces signature Spirit of Literacy events all part of Spirit of BC week. I really enjoy doing these types of things for a couple of reasons. First, it is a great opportunity to get out in the community and meet some new people and second, they always put on a great spread!
=====
I was also excited on the road this morning because tonight's NWJHL match-up between the Canucks and Wolves is HUGE. This entire weekend is just that. The Canucks now trail Peace River by a single point for 3rd in the league and time is running out. Dawson Creek really does not want to finish in 4th and play the Wheelers in the opening round of the playoffs.
There isn't much of a pre-game post tonight nor a playoff breakdown as I promised but we will discuss this during the broadcast tonight. Puck drops at 8:00pm MST (DGS Astro Paving Canucks pre-game show at 7:45pm MST).
See you at the rink!

Spirit of BC Week
You couldn't ask for a better day to kick of Spirit of BC Week here in the province.
The Spirit of BC flags were raised in the Peace Region earlier today marking the official kick off to Spirit week. In Chetwynd the flag was raised at noon and in Dawson Creek it was raised at 12:30pm.
Today there is free swimming all day at the Chetwynd Leisure centre (1-3pm, 5-9pm) and free skating at the rec. centre (6:45-7:45pm). In Dawson Creek today the Midget Rep's are hosting their home tournament today through Sunday. Also in Dawson tonight will be the Spirit Coffee House at the KPAC from 7-9pm.
=====
This is a monumental weekend for both the Dawson Creek Jr Canucks and the NWJHL as a whole. There will be a lot told this weekend and we will get a playoff picture that will become a bit more clear.
These two games for the Canucks (Slave Lake on Saturday and Peace River on Sunday) are absolutely huge. I am really looking forward to it.
=====
Could Sean Avery be heading back to the big apple? It appears so. Rangers' brass are talking about the idea and I think it's a good one. I am not really a Sean Avery fan but he was very successful in New York and I think a return could really boost the play of that hockey club. On the other hand it could blow up in their faces. Who knows?
=====
It's now 2:30pm and I'm still at the office. I think it's time for me to finish up my work and get home. Have a super Friday!

Wednesday Blogging ***Updated
I was under the weather a little on Tuesday but better now than sometime during the next week and a half. Things are really going to become busy with Spirit Week set to begin on Friday. There are planned events happening every single day and I have to cover them in both Chetwynd and Dawson Creek!
=====
There was a rather disturbing video on the Sportscentre Morning Loop when I woke up today.
During a minor hockey game over the weekend there was a fight on the ice. Following the game one of the parents attacked the linesman. He had to be restrained by some of the other parents.
So far no charges have been laid.
That type of behaviour is intolerable and absolutely brutal. People like that should not be around the game. Period.
*** The video posted was just found on YouTube.com minutes ago. It is the full (uncensored) version. Be aware there is some bad language shown and even that woman yelling at the refs afterwords should give her head a shake. Geesh.
=====
Only 4 games left for the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks and the playoff picture couldn't be less clear. The players were 'bag skated' at Monday's practise and they need a wakeup call after Saturday's 4-3 loss to Slave Lake. These are points that the team needs to be picking up on a regular basis. I'll put together a 'playoff picture update' soon to break everything down heading into the weekend.
=====
A pat on the back must go to everyone who helped out with the Jr. Canucks' player auction last Friday night. The players were auctioned off and raised over 17 thousand dollars and in total the night brought in closer to 20 thousand dollars! Incredible. Way to go!
I think I've got some pictures around here somewhere that I'll have to post at some point.
=====
That's all I can come up for now, I'm sure I'll think of something later.
Have a great day!
