Two streaks ended Sunday night in Swift Current. The Broncos played their first home game in a month, after going 3-7-1 in 11 consecutive road games...including winless in their last six outings. The home cooking agreed with Speedy Creek as they scored the first three goals, then withstood a third period rally to beat the Saskatoon Blades 4-2.
It was the end of a five-game winning streak for the Bridge City Bunch. Josh Nicholls and Brent Benson scored in the third period for 29-9-1 Saskatoon, who out-shot the Broncos 39-22...but were frustrated repeatedly by Swift Current goaltender Mark Friesen, especially in the first and third periods when the shot advantages were 17-9 and 13-6, respectively, in favour of the Blades.
Steven Stanford took the loss as his personal record fell to 19-3.
The Blades host Calgary Tuesday night at 7:05 at Credit Union Centre. Meanwhile, Prince Albert held off Red Deer 5-4 Sunday night. The Rebels were without Josh Cowen, who was handed an indefinite suspension, pending a review from the WHL Monday, after the forward was assessed a game misconduct for attacking and sucker-punching Blades' defenceman Stefan Elliott in Saturday's 7-3 Saskatoon triumph at Credit Union Centre.
