Blades 7 Rebels 3

(SaskatoonBlades.com)

In the first frame the Rebels may have had twice as many shots on goal as the Blades, but the Blades had twice as many goals. The Blades were outshot 14-7, but they made it count. The opening goal was from Blades 17 year-old rookie Matej Stransky. Red Deer left-winger, Tyson Ness, evened up the score mid-way through the period. Just over a minute later sophomore d-man, Dalton Thrower, had his 6th goal of the season to take back the lead and the period ended 2-1 in favour of the home team.

The second period was heated with a series of three fighting majors. Rebels offensive star Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a big hit on Lukas Sutter, who came back later with a mission to fight; a transgression which created a lot of angst on the Red Deer team and Sutter received 17 minutes in penalties. Colten Mayor opened up the scoring for the Rebels, tying up the game again. Marek Viedensky scored shorthanded, to give Blades a lead they would not relinquish. Not even a minute later Stefan Elliott had a goal of his own which proved to be the game winner. The Blades were outshot again, 15-9.

At the end of the second period Josh Cowen blindsided Stefan Elliott and then jumped him at centre ice, resulting in a five-minute major and a game misconduct. Josh Nicholls jumped in to assist Elliott and was ejected for being the third man in. The period ended at 4-2 for the Blades as the referees worked to get the angry players off the ice and into their dressing rooms.

The Blades opened the third twenty minutes with a powerplay goal from Darian Dziurzynski, assisted by Connor Cox (his second of three assists during the game) and Teigan Zahn. Thrower took advantage of a two-man advantage and scored his second goal of the night. Red Deer’s only goal of the third period came from Byron Froese who got a puck past Stanford. Chris Collins finalized the score, with another Blades goal, to make the game 7-3, tying a season-high seven goals for in one game (the other being a 7-3 win against the Bruins on Dec. 1.)

Steven Stanford made 40 saves tonight, to keep his perfect career 8-0 record against the Red Deer Rebels as a Blade. Elliott continues to increase his record with his 9th game winning goal of the season, and the Blades have now won nine straight games at home.
